Your Opportunity to Achieve the American Dream Keeps Getting Better!

Forbes.com
recently released the latest results of their American Dream Index, in which they measure “the prosperity of the middle class, and…examine which states best support the American Dream.”

The monthly index measures several different economic factors, including goods-producing employment, personal and commercial bankruptcies, building permits, startup activity, unemployment insurance claims, labor force participation, and layoffs.

The national index score was rounded out to 100.0 in January as a baseline for comparison. It rose the fourth straight month in a row to 101.8.

Alaska, coming in at 89.4, represented the lowest score on the index due in part to the recent collapse in oil prices. In contrast, Wyoming came in with the highest score at 115.1. You can see the full results can be seen in the map below.

Forbes Senior Editor Kurt Badenhausen explained why many states saw a boost in the index last month:

“The American Dream Index rose for the fourth straight month to 101.8 propelled by gains in goods-producing jobs and building permits, as well as declines in unemployment claims and mass layoffs.

Goods-producing jobs (manufacturing, mining, construction and agriculture) were up for the ninth straight month in May…Building permits rose for the fourth straight month compared to the prior year.”

Bottom Line

7 Signs You’re Ready to Buy a Place of Your Own

Are You Ready to Buy a Place of Your Own?

Living in an apartment or rental home does have its perks: You can test out different neighborhoods and locations, you have the flexibility to move, and you have access to great amenities like a gym or pool. But there’s a reason that owning a home, rather than renting one, is a highly desired achievement.

Maybe the thought of having your own place has crossed your mind only recently, or maybe you’re regularly saving a chunk of your paycheck for that future down payment. No matter where you are in the process of considering home ownership, here are the unmistakable signs that you’re ready to buy your first home.

1. You Want to Get to Know Your Neighbors

Because renters don’t tend to live in one apartment for very long, it can be difficult to meet people who live in your building. But when you buy a home and are more invested in your community, it’s easier to forge lasting friendships.

10 Winter Home Improvements That Are Worth The Investment

ChecklistWe hope everyone had a memorable Thanksgiving Day and are looking forward to the rest of the upcoming holidays!

With December officially upon us, residents can expect temperatures to continue to dip as we head into the New Year.

So today, we wanted to share with you some relatively easy home improvements that you can make that will save you money during the winter months.

Home Tips for Saving Yourself Money This Winter

Here are 10 home improvements that you can make this winter that will save you both money and energy:

Caulk around windows and doors, making sure that all cracks and holes are sealed. This will keep the cold air out of your house, which will keep your heater from working overtime. If necessary, you might also consider adding or replacing weather stripping.

Add area rugs to your tile and wood floors. This creates an extra layer of insulation in your home and also makes it easier to walk around your home in bare feet during the winter time.

Is Real Estate Still a Good Investment?

Warren Buffet Thinks So.Ann Arbor Real Estate Investment

The most successful investor and third wealthiest person in the world, Warren Buffet, recently shared his belief that real estate is still a good investment. He stated “The third best investment I’ve ever made was the purchase of my home” with the first two being wedding rings. In his annual letter to shareholders, he points out that, “Home ownership makes sense for most Americans, particularly at today’s lower prices and bargain interest rates”.

But, he advises to use caution when purchasing real estate and follow these tips:

  • Only purchase a home that you can afford. Don’t bank on growing into your house payment. Be able to afford it now, including having extra cash for unexpected events.
  • Buy low. Now is the perfect time for this, as housing prices are at an all-time low. Any market is impossible to predict, so don’t wait to take advantage of it.
  • Get a fixed mortgage. In the past, in order to afford their house payment buyers opted for a variable rate with the hopes their home would gain value and they could refinance into a lower payment in the near future. When the housing market went south, home values did not increase, rates increased, and homeowners could no longer afford their payments.
  • Plan on a long term hold. Home values fluctuate, but statistics show that over time real estate values increase. Plan on owning your home for at least 10 years to realize a return on your investment. Warren Buffet actually still lives in the Nebraska home he purchased 52 years ago for $31,500.
